A vertebral compression fracture (VCF) is
caused when one or more bones within the
spine weakens and partially collapses. Anyone
can experience a VCF, but they occur most
commonly in women. In fact, 25% of postmenopausal
women and 40% of women over
80 will suffer a VCF as a result of osteoporosis.
Fortunately, there is a highly effective, minimally
invasive treatment for VCFs that results
in less pain, a faster recovery and lower infection
rates compared with major surgery.
Kyphoplasty is an outpatient procedure performed
under conscious sedation and local
anesthesia. It takes about 30 minutes to treat
each fracture, and the patient usually returns
home the same day. During the procedure, a

A fast-drying bone cement is then injected
into the cavity, restoring height to the vertebrae
and relieving pain and other symptoms
almost immediately.
Kyphoplasty is recommended for patients
with persistent, severe back pain related to
VCFs; and where conservative management –
including bed rest, medication and bracing –
has failed, resulting in a reduced quality of life.
The subspecialty-trained interventional radiologists
at Lakeland Vascular Institute (LVI)
are among central Florida’s most experienced
physicians performing this procedure. “Another
