LI love Suze Orman. She speaks so much truth and really has
a lot in common in that respect. I, too, have such a heart for
-
ing them some peace of mind. How did a long time chef, single
mom of three, decide at the age of 44 to completely change her
career into something she had no real interest in? Well, let me
tell you a little snippet of my story.
I have been in the Food and Beverage industry since I was
when I was twenty. I married and had kids young and worked
as a caterer for most of my career, either for myself or someone
else. I moved cross country twice, and although we always had
enough, we never had enough to save. My Grandma harped on
insurance policies on us that we could cash out upon her death,
as she was the owner. She was smart. That policy and a small inheritance
that I received from her were the only two times that I
ever had any real money in my account. Starting a new business
and going through a divorce took care of that little nest egg and
again I was living catering to catering.
Meanwhile, my best friend Beverly was living her best
life. We met before we were even old enough to legally drink
and have always maintained an honest, supportive friendship
through the many years. She also had struggled through her
twenties. The difference between us was that she stopped struggling.
Where my life was becoming less stable, with moving and
divorce and a new business, hers was stabilizing. She was saving
and investing. She was planning for passive income (we are
going to devote a whole column to passive income soon), and
planning for her future. She was working for an insurance and
way, I would meet her at whatever hotel she was staying at so
we could catch up. She always tried to convince me to come
work with her at this company and I always emphatically said
I would not ever consider doing a job that wasn’t creative. I may
not have had a big bank account, but I had always been happy in
my work and I was really good at it.
Beverly worked on me for three years. She kept telling me

that selling insurance was not about selling, but about helping
others and bonus, you will make great money! “You could build
a business so that you DON’T have to work!” Beverly was relentless.
Still, I was not convinced. I wasn’t convinced until I
was on the side of the road at 5 am, broke, broken down and
embarrassed. She had come for a women’s conference for her
company and invited my son and I to meet her at the Gaylord
Palms in Orlando. It is full of amazing amenities that we could
use while she did her meetings and then she would join us for a
late dinner and catching up. She would need a ride to the airport
very early the next morning, so I naturally I would drop her at
the airport and then I would head home to prepare for a cater-
