1. DOUBLE TOP MTN: Elev. Gain: 2434 ft. 5.1 mi. from
Kidney Pond; 3.1 mi. from Nesowadnehunk Field. Steep
but rewarding views in all directions.
2. MARSTON TRAIL (LOOP): Elev. Gain: 2944 ft. From
Slide Dam; 1.3 mi. to Mt. Coe trail junction, 2.6 mi. to the
base of Mt. Coe slide (caution advised on slide), 3.1 mi.
to summit of Coe, 4.1 mi. to the junction with S. Brother
trail (from here, 0.3 mi. to summit of S. Brother), 4.8 mi.
to the 2nd junction of Coe and Marston trails. From here,
0.8 mi. to the summit of N. Brother and 3.7 mi. back to
the parking area at Slide Dam (mileage for this section
of trail will somewhat increase due to ongoing relocation.
Trail grade and footing will be improved). Check in with
a Ranger for updates and more details. Recommended
in order described above, Coe Slide is dangerous to
descend. Takes 7-8+ hours. Challenging.
3. MT OJI: Elev. Gain: 2365 ft. From trailhead at Foster
Field, 2.7 mi. to West Peak junction, 3.5 mi. to Old
Jay-Eye Rock, 4 mi. to summit. Option: Spot a car at
Marston Trailhead and use the OJI-Link Trail (4.2 mi.
from trailhead) to reach Mt. Coe slide and hike 2.6 mi. to
Slide Dam parking lot (Marston Trailhead) 3 mi. up Tote
Road from Foster Field.
4. GRASSY POND: Flat; ~3 mile loop to Daicey Pond
Cmpgrd and back to Tracey/ Elbow Pond Parking area
on Tote Road. Good wildlife habitat. Option for other
loops including connection to Katahdin Stream Cmpgrd,
more detailed map recommended.
5. OWL: Elev. Gain; 2637 ft. 3.6 mi. from Katahdin
Stream Cmpgrd. Very steep in places with fine views of
Witherle Ravine on Katahdin & the Klondike.
6. *HUNT (AT): Elev. Gain; 4168 ft. 5.2 mi. from Katahdin
Stream Cmpgrd to Baxter Peak. Very challenging;
exposed terrain; large boulders to scramble up. Marked
with white blazes.
7. *ABOL: Strenuous and challenging 3.4 mile hike to
Thoreau Spring.
8. LITTLE ABOL FALLS: Flat terrain; small falls, 0.8 mile
stroll from Abol Cmpgrd.
9. CRANBERRY POND: Flat; 1.5 mi. along Togue, Cranberry
and Rocky Ponds. 1 road mile to return to Togue
Pond Beach. Nice trail featuring wetland plants.
10. RUM POND: Flat; 2 mi. Pond views. Togue Pond
Gate is 1 mile from either trailhead. Rum Brook picnic
area is .1 mi. from intersection with Roaring Brook Road.
On Tote Road side, hike on Kettle Pond trail .1 mi. to
intersect with Rum Pond Trail.
11. KETTLE POND: Flat; 1.4 mile trail that intersects
Park Tote Road twice. Togue Pond Gate is 1 & 2.5 road
mi. from Kettle Pond intersections. Please refer to trail
signs or a more detailed map.
12. ABOL STREAM TRAIL/ABOL POND TRAIL: Can
be hiked as a loop. Flat; follow Abol Stream Trail (starting
at Abol Beach picnic area, going over the rock dam) 1.3
mi. to junction with AT and hike north for 0.1 mile. Hike
the Abol Pond Trail 1.9 mi. to intersection with Kettle
Pond Trail. Take the road back to Abol Pond picnic area
and the start of the Abol Stream Trail. Total loop = 3.3
mi..
13. BLUEBERRY LEDGES: Elev. Gain: ~500 ft. 4.2 mi.
from Katahdin Stream to junction with AT. Views of Katahdin
and small waterfall “ledges” midway along trail.
14. FOSS KNOWLTON/LOST: Elev. Gain; ~500 ft. 4.8
mile trail connects Daicey Pond to the Penobscot River’s
West Branch. Woodland wildlife area.
15. SENTINEL MTN: Elev. Gain: 797 ft. 2.8 mi. from
Kidney Pd. Low peak with excellent views. Trail passes
through mixed forest, last .7 mi. gradual, then steep,
uphill for .6 mi. to summit loop which offers views of West
Branch country, Doubletop and Katahdin.
16. DWELLEY POND: Flat; 1.4 mi. from southern
trailhead on Tote Road to pond; 3.2 mi. from northern
trailhead on Tote Road to Pond. Picnic area and good
wildlife viewing. Wet/buggy in spring.
17. HOWE BROOK: Elev. Gain; ~700 ft. Valley trail that
skirts many beautiful falls and pools. 3 mi. from S. Branch
Pond.
18. FOWLER PONDS/FIVE PONDS AREA: Flat to
moderate hiking. Loop connecting S. Branch & Trout
Brook Cmpgrd is 8.7 mi. Spur trail up Barrel Ridge for
great views.
19. TROUT BROOK MTN: Elev. Gain; 1078 ft. Beautiful
views of surrounding ponds and mountains. 1.3 mi. to
summit. Loop with Five Ponds Trail is 3.6 mi.
20. HORSE MTN: Elev. Gain; 795 ft. 1.4 mile moderate
hike, includes spur trail (0.1 mile) with nice views.
21. NORTH TRAVELER: Elev. Gain; 2171 ft. 2.7 mile
strenuous hike from S. Branch Pond with outstanding
views of the area.
22. CENTER RIDGE/TRAVELER: Cumulative Elev.
Gain: ~ 3700 ft., encompassing Peak of Ridges, Traveler
and N. Traveler. Strenuous full day, carry lots of water.
1.5 mi. from S. Branch to Center Ridge Trail, additional
2.1 mi. to Peak of Ridges. From there, 3.7 mi. over
Traveler and along ridgeline to N. Traveler summit, 2.7
mile descent to S. Branch Cmpgrd. Recommended in
order described above. Total distance is 10 mi.
23. SOUTH BRANCH MTN: Elev. Gain: 1649 ft. 2.6
mi. from S. Branch Pond to peak of Black Cat Mtn.
Roundtrip loop from S. Branch Pond using Pogy Notch
Trail is 6.6 mi. Strenuous hike with excellent views.
24. SANDY STREAM POND: Flat; 2.8 mile loop trail
around pond (the return is on the Russell Pond Trail).
Many people just hike the .6 mi. to boardwalk and “Big
Rock” viewpoint and back.
25. SOUTH TURNER MTN: Elev. Gain: 1633 ft. 2 mi.
from Roaring Brook. Steep with magnificent views of the
cirques (basins) of Katahdin.
26. KATAHDIN LAKE: Flat to moderate. Trail leaves
from Avalanche Field. At 3 mi. go left at trail junction to
reach the lake, picnic area, and Park rental canoes. The
right continues 0.3 mi. to the privately owned Katahdin
Lake Wilderness Camps – please respect their privacy.
Beautiful views of Katahdin. Great swimming.
27. *CATHEDRAL: Elev. Gain: 2353 ft. 1.7 mi. from
Chimney Pond to Baxter Peak. Very steep, mostly above
treeline & very exposed. Lots of hand over hand climbing
and large boulders.
28. *SADDLE: Elev. Gain: 2353 ft. 2.2 mi. from Chimney
Pond to Baxter Peak. Steep trail, mostly above treeline,
exposed, loose rock along slide, but least strenuous
descent to Chimney Pond.
29. *DUDLEY: Elev. Gain: 2005 ft. 1.3 mi. from Chimney
Pond to Pamola Peak. Very steep, large boulders and
above treeline. CLOSED until further notice due to unstable
rock conditions. This trail is currently being re-routed
to avoid unstable areas and it will take time to properly
construct the new section.
30. *HAMLIN RIDGE: Elev. Gain: 1842 ft. 2.2 mi. to
Hamlin Peak from Chimney Pond. Great views of North
and Great Basins.
31. *CHIMNEY POND: Elev. Gain: 1425 ft. 3.3 mi. from
Roaring Brook. Strenuous and rocky but sheltered in bad
weather. Basin Ponds are just over halfway, with nice
views of Katahdin.
32. *HELON TAYLOR: Elev. Gain: 3430 ft. 3.2 mi. from
Roaring Brook to Pamola Peak. Very steep, exposed trail
above treeline. No water available except near bottom
of trail.
33. *KNIFE EDGE: Elev. Gain: 348 ft. 1.1 mile exposed
ridge between Baxter Peak and Pamola Peak. All rock
and very narrow. Never attempt in bad weather. Not
recommended for those afraid of heights.
34. FOREST ECOLOGY AND MGMT TRAIL: Flat; 0.9
mi., Pick up a self-guiding brochure at the Scientific
Forest Management Area kiosk on the Park Tote Road.
13 information stations, ending with beautiful views of
Trout Brook.
