Any discussion of Old Florida restaurants begins
and ends with the Owl Cafe. It’s the standard
by which all others are measured, and rightly
so. It’s a wonderful venue with fantastic food
and top-notch service. Often neglected in such
conversations, though, is the Owl’s upstart
offshoot – THE TAP ROOM. The Tap Room has
its own menu, with offerings patrons can’t get
LONDON BROIL STEAK SANDWICH AT THE TAP ROOM
OYSTERS MIGNONETTE AT UP THE CREEK RAW BAR
anywhere else. While co-owner and chef Cassie
Gary may casually refer to it as “bar food,” the
menu far exceeds any expectations that term
implies. Two recent menu additions, the braised
pork shank and London Broil steak sandwich,
are perfect examples.
The braised pork shank is served tender and
hot over egg noodles and ladled with a tomato,
scallion and bacon cream sauce. Good luck
finding that in any other so-called bar! The
London Broil steak sandwich features sliced
beef piled high on a crusty
hoagie with fresh mushrooms,
cheddar cheese sauce and
a mountain of house-made
adobo potato chips. Only at
downtown Apalachicola’s
Owl Cafe would this be called
bar food. Enjoy it with any
of the sixteen frosty-cold
craft beers available on tap at
