Hos ting LGBA’s 2019 National Conference
T he Central Florida Sounds
of Freedom Band and
Color Guard have been
promoting LGBTQ awareness,
acceptance and equality through music,
entertainment and fellowship for nearly
a decade.
The nonprofi t organization began
servicing the Orlando area in 2011 with
a mission statement in place: Central
Florida Sounds of Freedom Band and
Color Guard will “provide exceptional
music, entertainment and inspirational
services for the LGBT and other
community based organizations. We
will promote acceptance and equality
throughout the community through
performances ranging from parades and
concerts to small ensembles.”
Their diverse membership is affi liated
with the Association of Concert Bands
(ACB) and the Lesbian Gay Band
Association (LGBA), the latter of which
will hold its 2019 National Conference
in Orlando during Come Out With
Pride.
The LGBA was formed in 1982 in
Chicago when seven bands in the city
met together. Since then, the LGBA
has grown to 38 bands, and has member
bands in the U.S., Canada, England and
Australia.
Additionally, the Sounds of Freedom
Band and Color Guard, along with the
South Florida Pride Wind Ensemble and
the Tampa Bay Pride Band, will host an
offi cial Orlando Pride Week Concert –
“Looking Back. Moving Forward.” – on
Oct. 13 at The Plaza Live, as part of the
LGBA’s conference.
