International drag queen and
singer Pabllo Vittar headlines
Come Out With Pride’s new
Pride Stage
JEREMY WILLIAMS
Pabllo Vittar is the world’s
most popular drag queen.
The Brazilian entertainer has
more than 9 million followers
on Instagram, more than 5 million
subscribers on YouTube and her videos
have been viewed more than a billion
times, that is billion with a “B”!
That is more exposure than any queen
on any season of “Drag Race” and more
views, followers and subscribers than even
RuPaul.
More so, Vittar has got a powerhouse
voice. The singer-songwriter made her
fi rst televised appearance on a Brazilian
show in 2014 belting out the Whitney
Houston classic “I Have Nothing” to
thunderous applause, and has since then
taken the world by storm releasing her
own original music.
Vittar has collaborated with some of
the music industry’s hottest acts including
Charli XCX, Major Lazer, Anitta and Diplo.
She also became the fi rst drag queen ever
nominated for a Grammy when her song
“Sua Cara” was nominated at the 2018
Latin Grammy Awards for Best Urban
Fusion/Interpretation.
Not only is Vittar a popular singer,
songwriter and drag queen, in her home
country of Brazil she is also a symbol of
living your truth and being your authentic
self. While Brazil legalized same-sex
marriage in 2013 and had been pushing to
be more progressive, last year the country
elected far-right, openly-homophobic
Jair Bolsonaro to lead the country. This
resurgence of anti-LGBTQ bigotry means
that Brazil needs role models like Vittar
now more than ever.
“I think the coolest thing about my
career is the messages I get on social
media, people saying that they are happier,
that my music helped them get through
hardships, or I’ve helped them feel good
about themselves,” Vittar said last year
in an interview with Vogue magazine. “It
makes me really happy. This is what makes
my job worth it, it’s to change other
people’s lives, or else it wouldn’t be worth
it. Sure, it is a fun job, but at the end of
the day, this is the coolest part.”
Vittar is bringing that authenticity and
excitement to Come Out With Pride
when she takes the Pride Stage at Lake
Eola Park on Oct. 12.
