WHAT’S IN IT FOR ME?
RANDY ARDIS, PENSACOLA STATE COLLEGE ADJUNCT INSTRUCTOR
In 2001, I sat in my first Professional in Human Resources
(PHR) certification course in Charlotte, North Carolina. I
was excited because for a long time I had admired those I
worked with who had gained their certifications and I saw
how they moved ahead more quickly into advanced roles. I
wanted the same thing for myself so I registered to take the
class with high expectations.
About one-third of the way through the weekly courses,
I received news that my position, along with 12,000 others,
had been eliminated as a result of a merger of two large
communications companies. I took the news very hard as I
had found out the very same week that my wife and I were
expecting our second child. When I looked at my priorities,
taking the class at that time dropped several notches for
me so I abandoned the course to focus on more important
concerns … like finding a job.
Life happens and priorities change, but I still wanted
to attain my certification. In fall 2012, I registered with
Pensacola State College and took the class for my Senior
Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) certification. My
instructor, Mike Owens, was a colleague who I had grown
to admire over the years.

He taught content and testing skills that helped me focus
and attain my long-desired certification. Coming full circle,
Mike decided to move on to other opportunities, and asked if
I would be interested in teaching the class. I told him I would
be honored and applied for the position.
My first class concluded in spring 2019, and I am proud
to say the success rate of the students was well above the
national average if they chose a self-study path. Every time I
got the phone call from a student sharing they had passed, I
got that “proud parent” moment to know the human resources
profession now has another certified professional ready to go
out and effectively tackle HR concerns in their workplaces.
Remember… it’s never too late to make the choice to
enhance your knowledge and to show others you have a solid
understanding of the human resources industry and how to
apply its knowledge to today’s dynamic work environments.
