Words from Home... Perry Hancock, Ph.D.
A single mother of three was experiencing the worst Thanksgiving of her life. Her
husband had just abandoned the family and all of her children had the flu. She needed
medications and food for her children but she only had $2.50 in her purse.
The secretary from her former church called one morning and said that the
church had a grocery gift certificate for her. She was so thankful to the church for its
love and care. She drove to the store and put the much needed items in her shopping
cart. At the checkout counter, she handed the cashier the gift certificate and told her
that it came from the church.
The clerk took the certificate and turned her back to the mother for what seemed
to be a very long time. When the cashier finally turned around, the mother saw that
tears were streaming down her face. The clerk asked, “Dear, do you have a turkey for
your family?” The mother said, “No, but that’s okay. My kids are sick anyway.” Then
the clerk said, “I want you to go and get a turkey, cranberry sauce, a pumpkin pie, and
anything else you need so your family can have a great Thanksgiving meal. Get some
medicine and juices for your children also.”
The mother was shocked. She went back, picked up the items, and returned to
the counter. When she asked why the cashier was helping her, the woman said, “I
prayed this morning that if I could help someone today, that they would come though
my checkout line.” The mother started crying. Her worst Thanksgiving had become
her best and she was so thankful. The clerk had a great Thanksgiving also because she
had given and blessed others.
President & CEO
Isn’t that what Thanksgiving is all about? Being thankful for what we have received
and being so thankful that we give. It reminds me of all of you and how you
meet the needs of our children. You provide them with all the food they need, the
clothes they need. You provide for their medical care and more. Most of all, you give
them a safe and loving, Christian home. God has placed them on your hearts and they
are blessed every day because you give.
Thank you so much. Thank you for your recent support of the new Recreation
and Pool Center. Thank you for giving
through the Fall Food Roundup. Thank
you for your regular monthly support
and the special gifts you provide during
the year. Our children are thankful for
you.
I pray that God will bless you and
your family with a wonderful Thanksgiving
this year. Let us all remember
the words of Psalm 100:4. “Enter
into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His
courts with praise. Be thankful to Him, and bless His name.”
