A person who is faithful to
his Deen but deficient in his
knowledge is better than a
person who is unfaithful to
his Deen but a scholar of
knowledge.
Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanawi
Ma’arif al-Akabir, p. 376
While performing wudhu,
most of the used water does
not touch the body, the
majority of it getting wasted here and there before it
makes contact with the body. If we are careful, then
each handful of water will come in contact with the
body before it falls to the ground; in this way, we can
easily perform wudu with substantially less water.
Maulana Muhammad Ya’qub Naunatawi
Ma’arif al-Akabir, p. 371
Sleeping more than a moderate amount is an
illness that needs to be remedied. If you sleep in
moderation, then reducing your sleep time is selfdestructive
and you will fall sick. Although reducing
sleep time may not be difficult in the present time,
but later on in life, for example, in old age, it will be
harmful.

Drink cold water. When you drink cold water,
‘AlhumdulilAllah’ will issue forth from every pore of
your body. When you drink warm water, you will
say AlhumdulilAllah with your tongue, but your heart
will not be grateful. Like cold water, thirst is also a
blessing, because it is only when you are thirsty that
you value the blessing of cold water. Accordingly,
you may have observed how much joy cold water
brings at the time of iftar in Ramadan. In fact, cold
water is so natural to us that we always add ice to
water to make it cold.

Allah has placed blessings in certain days and
times. As we sit here today on the day of Jumu‘a,
shortly before sunset, there is not a single person
sitting here who does not have something they are
concerned or anxious about. This is something we
all face. In such a situation,
instead of looking for an amil
(Muslim shaman) or seeking
amulets and charms or relief in
material things, make istikhara
for whatever troubles you, for
any sort of illness you have,
and for the problems that
concern you. Make istikhara
for yourself and also for your
relatives and friends.
Turn back to Allah.
This gathering is such that whatever anxieties you
have, however you are suffering, and whatever is
afflicting you, we have conviction that by turning
back to Allah, by the grace and bounty of Allah, your
hardships will be removed. Thus, make istikhara
for your circumstances and know that this is a time
when your du`as are accepted. Allah knows the
condition of the heart. When we are sitting for His
pleasure, He will not deprive us of what we need,
insha’Allah.
Dr. Muhammad Abdul Hayy Arifi
Khutubat Arifi, p. 32
The faces of those who defame the scholars of the
Deen are turned away from the qibla in their graves.
Anyone who desires, can go and see for themselves.
Maulana Rasheed Ahmad Gangohi
Ma’arif al-Akabir, p. 401
Once, my teacher, Maulana Shah Abdul Ghani said,
“The further you are from your nafs (soul) and
fulfilling the desires of your nafs, the closer you are
to gaining the closeness of Allah.”
