Town of Manlius
The town of Manlius was established in March of 1794. It has an estimated
population of 32,000 people and an approximate size of 67.4 square miles.
It is located on the eastern edge of Onondaga County, and the main routes
of travel are State Routes 92, 5 and 290. In the mid 1800s, cotton, wool and
saw mills, iron works and tanneries were some of the businesses in the
town of Manlius. In 1825, the Erie Canal ran across the town and created
a partnership in travel when the railroad was built in 1839. In the 1940s,
the railroad yard became one of the largest in the northeast, and handled
a majority of transfers for all of northern New York. The town has three
villages within its border: the villages of Manlius, Fayetteville and Minoa.
In 1994, the town of Manlius celebrated its 200th anniversary.

Village of Fayetteville
The village of Fayetteville was established in 1844. It has an estimated
population of 4,300 people and approximate size of 1.7 square miles. It
is located east of Syracuse, north of the village of Manlius and south of
Minoa. The main routes of travel are State Routes 5 (Genesee Street) and
257. In the 1600s, the Iroquois Indians occupied the land until the first
settlers came. Fayetteville was so named in honor of General Lafayette.
The construction of the Erie Canal began in 1817, completed in 1825, and
this opened up many new opportunities for all the area businesses. In the
1840s Fayetteville was a popular visiting spot for anti-slavery leaders and
speakers who backed the abolition of slavery. One resident of fame was
Matilda Joslyn Gage, a leader for the movement for woman’s suffrage. She
spoke at the Women’s Rights Convention in 1852 and she was also the first
woman to vote in Fayetteville. Mrs. Gage’s youngest daughter married the
now famous creator of the Wizard of Oz, L. Frank Baum.

powers of self-government by the state legislature in 1813, the village
had the county’s first newspaper, first pottery, first distillery and first gun
factory. It also nurtured the county’s first brigade and a rudimentary water
system. Its main routes are State Routes 92 and 173. Between 1960 to 1970,
