Village of East Syracuse
The village of East Syracuse grew alongside the New York Central
Railroad System, accommodating the needs of the railroad workers and
their families. At the time of establishment in 1881, the village had 1,099
residents. Today the village’s 1.6 square miles is home to nearly 3,000. East
Syracuse is located at the crossroads of State Routes 690 and 481, just south
of the NYS Thruway. It enjoys a thriving business community with major
retail chains, manufacturing, and the pharmaceutical giant Bristol Myers-
Squibb Company. The village’s Ellis Field Park is home to a pavilion, a skate
park, baseball fields, tennis courts, and Hanlon Pool, where residents can
go for swimming lessons, aerobics and open swim in the summer months.
The original inhabitants of the area were Onondaga clans, whose village
was atop a hill on the eastern border of Onondaga territory along what is
now Kinne Street. An established trail ran down part of what is now James
Street to Ley Creek where the Onondagas could travel by canoe to their
capital along the northeast shore of Onondaga Lake.
