Dorbrook Recreation
Area to Expand by
More than 5 Acres
The 5.1-acre addition is located near Dorbrook Recreation Area’s soccer elds.
The Monmouth County Park System is pleased to announce that
5.1 acres have been added to Dorbrook Recreation Area in Colts
Neck, thanks to a donation from the nonprot New Jersey Conservation
Foundation. This winter, New Jersey Conservation donated
a residential property on Route 537 to the Monmouth County Park
System. Future plans for the property include demolishing the vacant
residence and restoring the 5.1 acres as parkland.
“I am very pleased that the Marion Huber property has become
part of Dorbrook Recreation Area,” said Freeholder Lillian G. Burry,
liaison to the Monmouth County Park System. “My personal gratitude
is extended to the memory of Marion Huber and the New Jersey
Conservation Foundation.”
New Jersey Conservation received the property in 2006 from
a trust established by the late Marion Huber, who passed away in
2001. Marion’s nephew, the late Michael Huber, was a New Jersey
Conservation Foundation trustee.
“Marion Huber felt strongly about preserving open space, and it
was her intention that the property would eventually be used as parkland,”
said Michele S. Byers, executive director of the Far Hills-based
New Jersey Conservation Foundation. “We’re very pleased to donate it
to the Monmouth County Park System, and I know that the land will be
well used by local families as part of Dorbrook Recreation Area.”
One of the Park System’s most popular sites, Dorbrook Recreation
Area features the barrier-free playground Challenger Place, the
Sprayground (a water-enhanced play area), tennis courts, an inline
skating rink, basketball courts, athletic elds, and 2.3 miles of paved
trails. It also hosts numerous recreation programs and summer
camps each year. Dorbrook Recreation Area is just one of Park System’s
43 sites. In total, the Park System manages over 17,000 acres
of land throughout the county, preserving more than 5 percent of the
county’s area for current and future generations to enjoy.
