Oceanic Library
Irish Soda Bread Contest
BY LORI DRAZ In what has become the
unofcial kick-off of the
Rumson St. Patrick’s Day
Parade festivities, The Oceanic
Library hosted its annual
Irish soda bread contest on
Feb. 20.
Hopeful bakers brought
their breads to be judged by
Denise Kelleher and Maggie
Condon of Cups & Cakes in
Rumson. The packed crowd
of spectators assembled to
enjoy an evening of Irish music,
dance and deliciousness.
After careful consideration,
the soda bread winners were
announced and everyone enjoyed
an Irish toast for their
efforts in making this a successful
and fun event!
The rst place honors
went to those from Lunch
Break, the brother and sister
team of Jack and Emily Pearsall,
cheered on by chef/mentor
Tracey Turi. This team went
above and beyond, even
making homemade butter
with sea salt. Second place
went to Maryellen Reardon,
third place was awarded to
Bernadette Costello, and the
honorable mentions were Liz
Swikart and Christine Moore.
Special thanks also goes out
Jillian Shactman, Timothy Saks and Olivia Axelsen from
the Jig Factory in Atlantic Highlands
to event co-sponsor Pete Hogan,
of the Irish Heritage Committee; Kevin Feehan of Val’s Tavern; Joe Wurtz
on the bagpipes for the music; and the Jig Factory and the delightful Irish
Step Dance Team of Jillian Shactman, Timothy Saks and Olivia Axelsen.
