
Famous Sahaba l Who Died in Plague of ‘Amwas (18 A.H.)
1. Abu Ubayda bin al-Jarrahg was one
of the ten Sahaba l promised Jannah (Ashara
Mubashshara). He was appointed commander-inchief
of the Muslim armies in Sham by Umar bin
al-Khattab g and was one of the first to fall victim to
the plague. He died at the age of 58.
2. Mu‘adh bin Jabal g– the Prophet a said,
“The most knowledgeable about halal and haram
is Mu‘adh bin Jabal” (Tirmidhi). He also told Mu’adh
g that he loved him and then gave him invaluable
advice (Nisa’i). He appointed him as qazi of Yemen
where Mu’adh g stayed until the caliphate of Abu
Bakr g. He passed away at the age of 38.
3. Harith bin Hisham g was the brother of Abu
Jahl who accepted Islam in the Conquest of Makka
Mukarrama. He vowed to dedicate the rest of his life
for Islam and thus joined the Muslim forces in Sham.
4. Fadl bin Abbas l was the son of the beloved
uncle of the Prophet a and the older brother of the
famous sahabi Ibn Abbas k. He was also a radeef (a
sahabi who sat with the Prophet a on his mount)
in Hajjat al-Wada. He was also one the Ahl Bayt who
helped washed and bury the Prophet a.
5. Yazeed bin Abi Sufyan g was the older brother
of Muawiya g. He was an outstanding general who was
appointed commander of one of the forces to Sham by
Abu Bakr g. Umar g later appointed him governor of
Damascus.
6. Suhayl bin ‘Amr g represented the Makkans in the
Treaty of Hudaybiyya to which the blessed Prophet a
had said, “Your situation has been made easy (sahl; from
the same root as the name Suhayl) for you” (al-Sunan
al-Kubra li al-Bayhaqi). After hearing the virtue of going
out in the path of Allah, he vowed to never to return to
Makka Mukarrama and joined the Muslim forces in Sham.
7. Sharahbil bin Hasana g made the migration
to both Abyssinia and Madina Munawwara and is thus
nicknamed Dhu al-Hijratayn. He was a great fighter and
a commander of one of the forces in Sham. Umar g
later appointed him an administrator over a district in
Palestine. He died at the age of 69 or 75.
