Middletown South Swimmer
Victoria Ireland Heading for UNC
BY LES PIERCE
Middletown South swimming standout Victoria Ireland has
made her mark during her high school career. She now looks
forward to continuing her athletic and academic pursuits at the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
The Eagle co-captain leaves behind school records for the 100 but-
the record-setting 200 freestyle and 200 medley relay teams.
This season, Ireland repeated as the Monmouth County Cham-
record for the 100 breaststroke at 1:04.95. In 2019, she was named
“Swimmer of the Year” by the Asbury Park Press.
Ireland is also on the roster of the Red Bank YMCA Aquarockets.
Competing for that squad, she placed third at the 2019 YMCA Short
Course National Championships in the 100-yard breaststroke with a
clocking of 1:02.22. In addition, she was a member of the 400 medley
relay team, along with teammates Grace Kayal, Arabella Lee and Megan
Judge, that claimed the National Championship at that meet.
Like many athletes, her regular training regimen has been interrupted
by the COVID-19 pandemic. To maintain condition, she has
turned to alternative workouts as prescribed by her club team.
“I was fortunate to be guided by fantastic coaches,” said Ireland.
“Middletown South coaches Mrs. Skinner and Mr. Lightbody always encouraged
and supported every swimmer on the team both in and out of
the pool. I also would like to thank Coach Jack Caucino for coaching me to
Another big thank you to Coach Tom Wilkens, an Olympic medalist who
was my breaststroke coach at the Y.”
“I am proud to be
swimming at the University
of North Carolina
next season,” she
added. “The second I
stepped foot on campus,
I realized the school was
where I wanted to be.
After meeting the team
and coaching staff, I
couldn’t wait to become
a part of the UNC family.
I cannot thank my family,
teammates and coaches
enough for supporting
me along the way.”
