FEARLESS CAREGIVER CONFERENCE
A Caregiver’s Caregiver
Robyn Maniscalco, Founder/CEO Wellness Resource Support
Gary Barg: Our family caregivers loved hearing
what you had to say on the New Haven Fearless
Caregiver conference panel. Tell me about Wellness
Resource Support.
Robyn Maniscalco: We offer products, services, and
resources to patients and caregivers. We don't diagnose
or intervene with medical treatment but want to help
make their caregiving easier.
Gary Barg: Tell me about your background.
Robyn Maniscalco: Three years ago, my mother had
a severe stroke, putting put her in a coma. We quickly
had to learn to take care of her medical needs. At home,
we became her doctors and her nurses. We redesigned
our lives around this situation and were frustrated with
the lack of information from medical professionals.
Much of my time was spent researching things to help
my mother. We met many families along the way that
would ask, "where did you get that?" "where did you
see that?" and would share resources in waiting rooms
when I realized that there is a need for this information
and support.
Gary Barg: What are the main questions that you
want to answer family caregivers about what you do?
Robyn Maniscalco: That there’s a lot of resources and
tools to help manage caregiving. One thing I discussed
at the New Haven event was setting up a family
agreement, so everyone knows their role is in this
caregiving dynamic.
Gary Barg: When I become a member, what will I find
on your site?
Robyn Maniscalco: Our site is broken into different
components. There’s a section highlighting available
tools such as a stove alert for our loved ones living
with memory issues as well as support for those with
mobility and even arthritis challenges.
There’s a map of the United States with different
local resources, programs and services. Our Caregiver
Central section shows available trainings. You can find
books and camps for different health issues. We also
have my blog and guest blogs, and even an Ask an
Expert section.
Gary Barg: What did you hear from the family
caregivers at the Fearless Caregiver conference.
Robyn Maniscalco: That people were dealing with a
lack of information. We want to provide support and
information, so caregivers can focus on caregiving. It
makes me feel at peace because I can help somebody
understand what they didn't.
Gary Barg: And that they're not alone.
Robyn Maniscalco: Absolutely and that they shouldn’t
be afraid to ask questions. These are the kinds of things
I provide to my members.
