In the private library of the bookish Sultan Ahmet III (1673-1736), located in the Topkapi Palace (Istanbul,
Turkey), this hexagonal hanging ornament looks quite ordinary at first glance. But, it is not. It
is lined with papyrus that is covered in medallions and rosettes upon which the following is written:
the names of the Prophet a, benedictions upon the Prophet a, the 99 names of Allah, the names
of the Seven Sleepers (Surah Kahf), the Testimony of Faith, prayers prescribed by the Prophet a to
ward off disasters and hardships, prayers to be recited in ritual ablution, various ayahs of Quran and
hadith of the Prophet a, and a prayer for Sultan Ahmet III.
