Once Hazrat Maulana Rasheed
Ahmad Gangohi mentioned that
a man stayed with a shaykh for
a long time, he complained that
his heart’s condition had not improved.
Shaykh inquired, “What
is the purpose of your improvement?”
He replied, “I will take
whatever blessing I get from you
and pass it on to others.” The
Shaykh said, “It is the corruption
in intention that is at fault since
you have already decided to become
a shaykh. Get rid of this ridiculous
idea and think of the favors which Allah has bestowed
upon us, of which we are obliged to give thanks for
and worship in return. The one who remembers Allah and
prays in the hope for benefit in return, is a fool. There is
malice in their intentions. What benefit? What reward? This
being, this body, these eyes, this nose, these ears, and these
senses which Allah Almighty has given. First think of the
gratitude that is owed. After that (do you still) expect benefit
and reward?”

Anas g reported that Rasulullah a said: Four things are
signs of misfortune:
1. Tearless eyes (eyes that do not shed tears in fear of Allah);
2. Hard-heartedness (i.e. a heart that is not softened by
thoughts of the Akhirah, nor moved to sympathy for others);
3. High hopes about the distant future
4. Greediness about material gain

Although shaving the beard is not as grave of a sin as committing
adultery or drinking alcohol, there is a difference.
When a person commits adultery, he is devoid of the light
of iman. Later, that iman returns. However, the person who
shaves his beard is always in a state of sin even while he is in
worship such as during salat, fasting, hajj, and reciting Quran.
Besides, there seems to be a degree of boldness that the
believer who shaves openly commits this sin in public.

A person asked Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanawi about not being
punctual in his salat. He replied, “There are two remedies
for this. One is difficult, the other is easy. The difficult remedy
is that one should fix a penalty on himself that should
not be so high that he is unable to
pay it nor too low that it does not
place a burden on the nafs. This is
a difficult remedy as it is not easy
to fix a penalty on yourself. The
second remedy is easy and that is
one should spend a few days with
someone from among the Awliya.
Inshallah, through this, he would
quickly attain rectification.

Allah is close to the person when he says “Allah, Allah” as
narrated in the hadith, “I am with he who remembers Me”
(ana jaleesu mun zakarani Shu’ab al-Iman). The time of
zikr of Allah is, in fact, the time of meeting and being in
front of Allah. When a person says “Allah” with love and
affection, he is indeed knocking at the door of Allah and is
asking Allah to open the doors of His nearness to him.

Two things are extremely vile for the people of knowledge:
greed and arrogance. They must not possess these (two evil
traits).

Someone asked Luqman, “Who is the worst of men?" He
replied, “The one who does not mind being watched while
doing an evil deed.”

Imam Shafi‘ said, “Three things are difficult: generosity at
the time of financial straits; being pious in solitude; to utter
the truth before those who you are afraid or hopeful of.”
