Independent Living
INDEPENDENT LIVING RESIDENCES
Independent Living Residences are an excellent first step for older adults that no longer can
or want to live in their family home. Independent Living Communities create social, stress-free,
low maintenance atmospheres designed to keep older adults active, healthy and safe and are a
great option for many. Independent living communities vary in the type of amenities and services
they offer. Some communities resemble resorts offering high end dining and a wealth of services,
activities and amenities.
If an older adult needs assistance with
activities of daily living (ADLs), an Independent
Living community is not a good fit. Instead, an
assisted living facility, or ALF, (see page 14) or
a nursing home (see page 26) would be a more
suitable living option as they provide higher
levels of care.
CCRC
A Continuing Care Retirement Community
offers a tiered approach to the aging process.
Healthy adults reside independently in singlefamily
homes, apartments or condominiums.
When assistance with everyday activities
becomes necessary, they move into assisted
living or nursing care facilities within the same
community. CCRCs require an entrance fee as
well as monthly maintenance fees.
Independent Living
The key difference between independent
living and other senior housing options
is the level of assistance offered for
activities of daily living. There are many
types of independent living arrangements,
from apartment complexes or
houses to congregate living, which range
in cost and services provided.
