A sign of ikhlas (sincerity) is
to think that one is insincere
(deedi ‘adami ikhlas).

Two things are of importance
in salat: praying the fard, wajib,
Sunna, and mustahab; and,
to keep the focus on Allah
in every rukn (component of
salat) at least once for a short
time.

Once, Hazrat Shaykh (Shaykh al-hadith Muhammad
Zakariyya) was going to the Haram. His attendants
and others were talking about random matters.
Hazrat Shaykh said to them, “You are going to the
Haram. Make the mindset for it.”

Hazrat Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanawi had gone to
Lucknow for treatment. Hazrat Shaykh wrote to
a scholar who lived in the area that Hazrat (i.e.
Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanawi) is nearby and that he
should take out time to go and benefit from him. He
wrote in his reply, “I read Hazrat Thanawi’s books
every day, allhamdulillah.” Hazrat Shaykh wrote
again saying, “I did not ask you to benefit from his
knowledge; I asked you to benefit from him. For
that, you would need to sit in his suhba (company).”

While doing dhikr of Allah, one should consider
themselves unworthy and that it is only by the blessing
of Allah that they can utter His name.

Hazrat Maulana Badr Alam Meerati was very sick.
Some people have the habit of saying, “Hazrat if you
need anything, please let us know.” He would say
to them, “If you consider someone a buzurgh (pious
shaykh), then do you think they would turn to you
or to Allah for their needs?
One should find out themselves
and fulfill the need of
the buzurgh i.e. this habit
of asking the shaykh is just a
cultural formality.”

Deen and knowledge of the
deen are two different things.
Deen without knowledge of
the deen is no good. The sacred
knowledge is of two types: knowledge in words
and the true knowledge which is a nur (light) that can
be gained without words, a book, and terminologies.
Most Sahaba l possessed the true knowledge. This
knowledge in contrast to the first type can also be
called meaning. It is this knowledge which is necessary
for the Deen.1

Arrogance in some ways is worse than disbelief itself
since even kufr is born out of arrogance… this is why
it is said that arrogance is a branch of kufr. And all
the sins associated with arrogance are called satanic
sins, which are worse than the bestial sins. This is
why the Prophet a said, “Backbiting is worse than
fornication.” The taufiq to gain forgiveness from
these satanic and ego-related sins is rare because the
afflicted does not even realize the disease within
himself.
