Lincroft Employee Retires,
Looks to Pursue Sign
Language Instruction
BY LES PIERCE
For more than 30 years, cashier Cindy Wood has been a beacon of
good will at the Lincroft Acme. A welcome greeting and a ready
smile has been her trademark. Unfortunately for local customers,
Wood’s last day on the job was Feb. 20. She is now looking forward to
enjoying retirement.
Wood began her career with Acme Markets when she was hired for
a part-time position at the West Long Branch store in June 1979. A few
years later, that site was closed, and she joined the staff at the Shrews-
1988, she transferred to the Lincroft store for a cashier position.
Wood disclosed that with her newfound free time, she plans to
resume her second
career as a sign language
instructor. She
previously provided
sign language instruction
from 1980
to 2007 through the
Monmouth County
MAECOM program.
She initially came
upon sign language
as a student at Georgian
Court. Immediately
intrigued, she
promptly immersed
herself in mastering
the technique.
Wood has assisted
people with her signing
skills many times
over the years and
explained the experi-
Cindy Wood on her last day at Lincroft Acme
practices often to maintain her skill level.
She was born in Florida and moved to Long Branch at the age of
5. She still calls Long Branch her home. A member of the Long Branch
Elks for 10 years, she is hoping to share her signing skills through that
organization.
Adding long walks to her exercise regimen is something Wood is
also looking forward to. She earned a black belt in kickboxing several
years ago and works out on a heavy bag regularly.
“I have enjoyed working for Acme 41 years and 8 months,” she said.
“I would highly recommend anyone joining the Acme team as it is a wonderful
company to work for. I will miss many employees and customers
as many are family to me. I am very much looking forward to teaching
sign language again as it is very rewarding sharing my knowledge.”
