Holmdel Wrestling
Team Completes
Winning Season
BY LES PIERCE
The Holmdel wrestling squad lost seven starters and four District
medalists to graduation last year. The Hornets faced a challenging
rebuilding year but managed to produce a winning season with an
overall record of 6-3 and 5-1 against Shore Conference opponents.
Four wrestlers posted 8-1 records: freshman Anthony Paulino, junior
Luke DuPont, sophomore Thomas Cleary and sophomore John Steele. As
all four are underclassman, it appears 10th year Head Coach Danny Franke
has successfully rebuilt the team for the foreseeable future.
Paulino wrestles primarily at 113 pounds but moves up to 120 when
needed. He scored four falls and one technical fall in his rookie season.
DuPont patrols the 170 slot and, like Paulino, has four falls and a
technical to his credit. He was a District 18 silver medalist in 2020. District
tournaments will not be held this year due to COVID-19 concerns.
Representing the Hornets at 182 is Cleary. He scored three pins
with one at 35 seconds and another one click more at 36 seconds.
Steele has earned a reputation as a hard-hitting linebacker on the
Holmdel gridiron. He brings the same level of intensity on the mat, scoring
six falls among his eight victories, competing at 195 pounds.
Senior Matteo Pinnero is a four-year veteran starter, a 2020 District
18 silver medalist and a team leader. He put up a record of 6-2 wrestling
at 152 pounds, dispatching three opponents via the pin.
Other Holmdel wrestlers posting good records were Zach Rabkin
(6-3, four falls), Hazem Zaky (6-2, two falls) and Alexander AJ Todisco
(6-3, two falls).
