On the Beach
Corolla & the northern beaches
Overlooking the vast expanse that is the Atlantic
Ocean, you'll find Currituck's northern beaches
of Corolla and Carova – more than twenty miles
of unspoiled remote seascapes where you can
enjoy all your favorite beach vacation pastimes:
frolicking with your
kids in the surf, boogieboarding,
shelling,
taking in the area's
unique historical sites
or simply relaxing in
the sun with a good
book. If you crave more
adventure, opportunities abound for surfing,
fishing, kayaking, parasailing, paddleboarding
and more. Just north of Corolla, where the paved
road ends, you can take a tour of the offroad
area and see wild horses on the beach, the
legendary descendants of Spanish mustangs
thought to have been brought here by seafaring
explorers in the 1500s.
For your convenience, this guide has been divided to
highlight both the wonders of Currituck's majestic
Outer Banks beach communities as well as the
offerings of the Currituck Mainland & Knotts Island.
Beach attractions begin here. For information on
Mainland attractions, please see page 18.
HoWrsields
of Corolla
From tales of swashbuckling
pirates of the 17th century to
chronicles of explorers who
risked life and limb in search
of new lands, much Outer
Banks history is the stuff
of legend. Today in Corolla,
some legends live on, roaming
windswept beaches and
dunes in Corolla and Carova
on the northeastern tip of the
Currituck Outer Banks.
The Corolla wild horses reside
just north of Historic Corolla
on 7,000-acres of unspoiled
coastal terrain within the
Currituck National Wildlife
Refuge. Here you will have the
unique opportunity to gaze
upon these majestic creatures
in their natural habitat.
The excitement many visitors
feel upon spotting one of these
legends for the first time can be
breathtaking and is enhanced
by the mystique surrounding
how these beautiful animals
may have come to be here over
The wild horses are best enjoyed from a safe distance of at least
50 feet and cannot be fed. (Please remember, they are wild.)
