3 On the Beach
Through genetic testing, we
know that they are descendants
of Spanish Colonial Mustangs,
but precisely how 1000s of their
Spanish ancestors originally
came to reside on the beaches
of the Outer Banks remains an
enigma. Regardless, one thing
is clear: their spirit, grace and
resilience will enchant you.
There are several ways to see
these legendary horses. You can
book a tour with one of several
local guides who drive small
groups in specially designed
vehicles. If you have a four-wheeldrive
vehicle, you can drive onto
the beach yourself just north of
Corolla. (See page 29 for rules)
If you’re staying in Carova, you
can also walk the beach and
encounter these horses on foot.
Because the horses are wild,
officials ask visitors to respect
the animals’ domain and to
refrain from petting and feeding
them. Keeping them wild and
free is why generations of visitors
have enjoyed watching them
graze, play, and gallop across this
magnificent land by the sea.
