October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month
and it is so important to know that early
detection is key to saving lives.
“New Jersey has one of the highest rates
of breast cancer in the United States,” says
Harriet Borofsky, M.D., Medical Director of
Breast Imaging at Bayshore Medical Center
and Riverview Medical Center. “Early detection
is key not only to optimize chances of complete
cure but also to optimize treatment options and
minimize the impact of care on your daily life.
Dr. Borofsky was able to give answers to the most
frequently asked questions:
Why screen for breast cancer?
The American College of Radiology estimates that over
two million women will be diagnosed with breast cancer
each year and more than 200,000 American women will
be diagnosed, but breast cancer is extremely treatable
and easiest to manage when detected on a mammogram.
With regularly scheduled mammograms, a breast
cancer diagnosis provides patients with more treatment
options, which greatly improves outcomes as well as
longer-term survival rates.
Who should be screened for breast cancer?
All women should have breast cancer risk assessment
by the age of 30 and all women at average risk should
begin annual screenings at the age of 40.
Since the initiation of breast cancer
screening programs in the 1990s, there has
been a 40% reduction in breast cancer deaths.
Mammograms have come a long way and with
Bayshore Medical Center’s recent addition of
the SmartCurveTM Breast Imaging System and
Clarity HD High-Resolution 3D™, mammograms
are faster, with the highest resolution in imaging,
virtually painless and more comfortable.
How often should screenings be scheduled?
Generally, all women should have an annual screening
beginning at the age of 40 and for high-risk women,
additional screenings with breast MRI or ultrasound
depends might be recommended.
The Women’s Center at Bayshore Medical Center
is accredited by the American College of Radiology as a
Breast Imaging Center of Excellence.
“Routine mammograms are essential to the ongoing
health of every woman, even during the COVID-19
pandemic, these procedures are critically important,”
says Dr. Borofsky. “Breast Cancer didn’t stop during this
pandemic and neither will we!”
