MUSEUM CITY
A 105-ton stone mesa frames the entrance to the new
James Western & Wildlife Art Museum, a testament
to the vision of Tom James, chairman emeritus of
Raymond James Financial and his wife Mary. The
James’ donated $50 million to build the museum,
which displays of a portion of the couple’s vast
collection of western and wildlife art, sculpture and
Native American jewelry. Built on the fi rst fl oor of a
former parking garage in the heart of downtown, the
new museum includes a two-story stone arroyo and
waterfall in the lobby.
The James museum is one more jewel in St. Petersburg
growing collection of world-class venues, which also
include the internationally acclaim Salvador Dali
Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, and two museums
dedicated to glass – the Chihuly Collection and the new
Imagine Museum, which opened this year. The Museum
of the American Arts and Crafts Movement is currently
under construction and will house the private collection
of businessman and philanthropist Rudy Ciccarello.
Additional St. Pete museums include the Florida
Holocaust Museum, St. Petersburg Museum of History,
Dr. Carter G. Woodson African American Museum and
the St. Pete Sculpture Museum displaying bronze and
clay pieces by local artist Jon Hair.
