Dr. Oxiris Barbot Appointed to Commissioner
of Health and Mental Hygiene in New York
Dr. Oxiris Barbot has been
appointed to Commissioner of the
City’s Department of Health
and Mental Hygiene. In this role, she will
lead the 6,000-member agency charged
with protecting and promoting the health of
New Yorkers in one of the largest and oldest
public health agencies in the world. She is
the first Latina to lead the agency.
A native Bronxite and a pediatrician,
Dr. Barbot most recently served as Acting Health
Commissioner. Dr. Barbot, who had previously
served as first deputy commissioner, has been
the acting leader of the department since
the departure of former commissioner Dr. Mary
Bassett. Dr. Barbot previously served as medical
director for New York City’s schools and as
Baltimore’s health commissioner from 2010 to
2014.
Dr. Barbot has over 25 years of experience
in advancing health equity and providing healthcare
in urban communities. She previously served as
commissioner of health for Baltimore City. Prior, she
served as medical director of the Office of School
Health at the NYC Department of Health and
Mental Hygiene and the NYC Department of
Education. Before working in New York, Dr. Barbot
was the chief of pediatrics and community
medicine at Unity Health Care, Inc., a federally
qualified health center in Washington, D.C.
Dr. Barbot received a bachelor’s degree from
Yale University and holds a medical degree from the
University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.
She completed her pediatric residency at George
Washington University’s Children’s National
Medical Center.

In her new role, Alejandra Santamaría oversees the state of Arizona with
two broadcast stations in Phoenix, two in Tucson, four radio stations
and Digital marketing solutions including social media, targeted email
campaigns and customized content creation.
With a media career spanning over 25 years, she started at
Univision where she was an intern and hired as a Research Analyst out
of college. She was the Research Manager before leaving to radio for
fours years. She worked for Hispanic Broadcasting Corporation (HBC)
where she served as Research Director and later transitioned into Sales
as Account Executive. Santamaría was recruited to return to Univision
as Sr. Account Executive for the recently launched KFTR-TV in 2002.
She was promoted to Local Sales Manager in 2007. She was given the
title Director of Local Sales in August 2013 where she lead a local team
of 10 professionals who jointly generate $33 million dollars in revenue.
Santamaria is a founding member of the Univision Women’s
Leadership Council, a corporate initiative that aims to help advance
the careers of women within Univision. She earned her B.A. in
Communications and a Business Minor from Loyola Marymount
University. She currently resides in Scottsdale with her husband Atilio,
their eighteen-year-old twins Maximilano and Sebastian, and English
Bulldog Daisy.

Alexis Hermosillo is a proud
fourth-generation resident of
the City of El Mirage where
she and her family have lived
for nearly 70 years. Prior to
becoming Mayor of City of El
Mirage in Arizona, she worked
for a public transportation
company in the Maricopa
county area, and previously
worked for the U.S. House
of Representatives as a district
representative for Congressman
Raúl Grijalva.
Hermosillo holds an M.A.
in journalism and a B.A. in
interdisciplinary arts, and is
currently pursuing her doctoral degree in Organizational
Leadership. In her spare time, she puts her knowledge and skills to
work supporting opportunity youth in El Mirage.
She is committed to the empowerment of women. She serves
on the Board of the YWCA of Metropolitan Phoenix, and has worked
with the Hispanic Women’s Corporation, supporting their national
youth initiatives. She believes that investing in today’s youth is an
investment in the future, and has dedicated herself to engaging and
motivating Latino youth through leadership development programs,
including with the National Council of La Raza (UnidosUS).LS
