UF Health Shands Children’s Hospital patient Julianna Driggers participated in the 2017 Hyundai Hope on Wheels handprint ceremony, which
recognized Matthew Cascio, MD, who is working to bring better treatments to our young cancer patients.
Matthew Cascio, MD, was presented with a $150,000 Hyundai Young
Investigator Grant from Hyundai Hope on Wheels during a ceremony
in which Gainesville-area children battling cancer placed their painted
handprints on a 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe to commemorate their fight
against the disease. With this grant, Hyundai Hope on Wheels has now
awarded nearly $2 million to UF. Cascio is a pediatric oncologist and an
assistant professor in the division of hematology and oncology in the
department of pediatrics.
Three UF College of Medicine investigators received Brain Aneurysm
Foundation grants for brain aneurysm research: Brian Hoh, MD, and
Koji Hosaka, PhD, from the Lillian S. Wells department of neurosurgery,
and Sylvain Dore, PhD, from the department of anesthesiology. The
Brain Aneurysm Foundation’s mission is to promote the early detection of
brain aneurysms by raising awareness of the signs, symptoms and risk factors.
Thomas S. Huber, MD, PhD, was appointed to the Vascular Surgery
Board of the American Board of Surgery, or VSB-ABS. Huber, a professor
and chief of the division of vascular surgery and endovascular therapy,
is among five representatives from five major regional vascular surgery
societies to fill the newly created positions. The VSB-ABS, a component
board of the American Board of Surgery, oversees and defines all
processes related to board certification in vascular surgery.
Sasha Grek, MD ‘04, was appointed chief quality officer for the UF
Health Shands hospitals and associated clinical programs. Grek is an
assistant professor of anesthesiology and critical care medicine with
clinical interests focused on trauma and cardiac critical care.
Irene Malaty, MD, was elected the first female president of the Florida
Society of Neurology. Malaty is an associate professor in the department
of neurology, the medical director of the National Parkinson Foundation
Center of Excellence and the director of the Tourette Syndrome Clinic.
