Welcome to the Gator family
4
Before the start of the academic year in early August, alumni across the country met with incoming first-year medical students from
their area to welcome the new Gators into the UF College of Medicine family.
Participating in the Alumni Ambassador Network’s summer send-off program, Hunter Newsom, MD ’96 (above, center), hosted
seven students from the Tampa area for lunch. Newsom also provided a tour of his ophthalmology practice to give rising medical
students a glimpse into life as a physician.
For those interested in becoming more involved with your medical school alma mater, please consider joining the Alumni
Ambassador Network. Contact the UF College of Medicine Office of Development and Alumni Affairs at drgator@health.ufl.edu.

2007 graduates honor classmate

The 2017 UF College of Medicine Alumni Weekend, held Sept. 15-16,
provided opportunities for alumni to reconnect and remember the
relationships they built during their time as medical students.
In a cozy nook near the third-floor staircase of the George T. Harrell, MD,
Medical Education Building, a group of alumni, family and friends from
the UF College of Medicine class of 2007 gathered Saturday to honor the
memory of Matt Smith, MD ’07. Classmates dedicated the space to Smith,
who passed away at 37 from the rare bone cancer Ewing’s sarcoma last
September. The nook houses a table and four chairs, and a plaque on the
wall commemorates Dr. Smith.
