7 Making meaningful connections
Choosing a mentor is a vital first step in a
PhD student’s journey toward becoming an
independent researcher. The 32 students who
joined the UF College of Medicine Graduate
Program in Biomedical Sciences in the fall
took that step in August, selecting a mentor
and a research concentration. The milestone
was marked with an inaugural Mentor-Match
Celebration, held Aug. 18 in the Biomedical
Sciences Building’s Broad-Bussel Atrium.
“The things that make our lives joyful are the
interactions we have with one another,” said UF
College of Medicine Dean Michael L. Good, MD.
“This graduate program is one place where team
relationships will be rich and meaningful.”

Recently, a number of leaders at UF Health have assumed important roles within
the Association of American Medical Colleges, a national not-for-profit association
dedicated to transforming health care.
Ed Jimenez, CEO of UF Health Shands, serves on the administrative board of
the Council of Teaching Hospitals, a group of individual leaders who represent
approximately 400 of the nation’s leading teaching hospitals and health
systems. The board focuses on issues of unique interest to the academic medical
community, including advancing graduate medical education and improving the
value of academic health centers.
Stephen Sugrue, PhD, senior associate dean for research affairs at the UF College
of Medicine, was appointed chair-elect of the steering committee for the AAMC
Group on Research Advancement and
Development, or GRAND. Sugrue has served
as chair-elect since April and will begin his
term as chair in April 2018. The group for
research deans provides a national forum
for action on issues critical to the research
enterprise and for linking advances in
research with improvements in health.
“The AAMC provides a valuable service to
the leaders of America’s medical schools
and teaching hospitals,” said UF College of
Medicine Dean Michael L. Good, MD, who
was recently elected to the administrative
board of the AAMC’s Council of Deans. “It
is important for the college and UF Health
to have a seat at the table in the efforts to
improve the nation’s health."
