Publisher’s Message
On Wednesday, February 7, corporate executives of the LATINA Style 50 Best Companies
for Latinas to Work for in the U.S. gathered at the White House for a briefing on Diversity in the
Workplace with U.S. Treasurer Jovita Carranza, Secretary of Transportation, Elaine Chao, and
Special Assistant to the President, White House Office of Public Liaison Jennifer S. Korn.
It seems only yesterday that we were getting ready to celebrate
Christmas and here we are already beginning to wrap up February.
We have just returned from Washington D.C. after producing our 20th
Anniversary of the LATINA Style 50 Awards and Diversity Leaders
Conference. It was a wonderful occasion with some of the most accomplished
Latina professional executives in the nation. You will be able to read all
about the conference and the many exciting things that took place in
our next issue of the magazine. I urge you not to miss it!
We begin our 24th year of publication of LATINA Style profiling one
of our Latina superstars, the Treasurer of the United States, Ms. Jovita
Carranza. From humble beginnings to a dock job at UPS, Jovita never
wavered on her commitment to excel and giving 110 percent on anything she
was involved in. Rising through the ranks she became the highest-ranking
Latina executive at UPS in history serving in the role of vice president
of air operations at the time of retiring. She then went on to serve in
President’s Bush administration as the Deputy Administrator for the
Small Business Administration. You will be fascinated by her story.
She is a wonderful example of Latina achievement and commitment
to our community and our country.
On a different note, if you think that all is well in the states affected by
the Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria, think again. Nowhere has the
pain been felt in larger scale than in the island of Puerto Rico, they continue to
experience incredible suffering. We will continue to monitor the “recovery
efforts”. It will take a long time for the island to recover and it will require a
lot of help. Organizations like Puerto Rico Real-Time Recovery Fund,
Unidos for Puerto Rico are working on securing help. GoFundMe has a
list of organizations where you can donate directly.
Dr. María “Mayita” Meléndez-Altieri, Mayor of the Autonomous
Municipality of Ponce, P.R. writes our Punto Final Column in a strong
appeal on behalf of the Island.
We concluded 2017 by celebrating the Parents Step Ahead Gala
recognizing the Parents of the Year for their exceptional work in the
schools on behalf of their children. Now they prepare themselves for their
trip to Washington D.C. this coming September when they will be recognized
at the National LATINA Symposium. We wish you all a wonderful 2018
and may all your wishes come true.
