RAMPING UP
Local students use their construction skills
at a 4Cs workshop for a good cause
For a week this past July, eight boys and two girls from
local middle and high schools took part in a construction
exploration workshop sponsored by HBRACC at Cape
Cod Community College.
Not only did they learn valuable skills from Barnes Custom
Builders and Lineal Construction, they together built a ramp
to be donated to wheelchair-bound Mashpee resident through
Cape Cod Hospital.
“They were building something knowing it was going to
someone who really needed it,” Tammi Jacobsen, the college’s
Director of Workforce Development & Training, said of the
capstone project. The students also were tasked with building
their own tool boxes.
Cost for the workshop was $299/student, but EJ Jaxtimer
and Duffany Builders provided full scholarships for two of
the students. Mid Cape Home Center donated tool belts and
lumber, Cape Associates provided flat bars, Crane Appliance,
tape measures, and Wood Lumber, screwdrivers.
Cape Cod Community College hopes to offer the workshop
again next year, and work with Cape Cod Hospital to identify a
project that would again benefit its patients.
For more information on how to get involved with the
construction workshop, call Tammi Jacobsen at (508) 375-5011.
