Our Amish area is conveniently
located in Northeast Ohio. We are within
an hours drive of Cleveland, Akron, or
Youngstown.
���������� ���������������������� ���������� ������ �������������� ����������
Amish farms and tidy white homes. It is the
second largest Amish settlement in Ohio
and fourth largest in the world. The Amish
of Geauga County belong to the Old Order
and are less commercialized than some other
Amish groups.
The Amish live without modern
conveniences such as electric, motorized
vehicles and often without phones. A very
unique glimpse of the past can be seen because
the Amish work the land the way it
was done over 100 years ago. For instance,
����������������������������������������������������������������������������������������
machinery and travel in horse-drawn buggies.
For phones, neighbors will sometimes
share a telephone in a small outdoor shanty
building.
Farming is still a common trade for
the many Geauga County Amish. For the
������������ ������������������ ���������������������� �������������� ������������
was formed in 1994 and is still about 98 percent
Amish. Their store is located on Route
87 just east of town. Vegetable farming and
maple tree tapping is also highly popular in
our area. A fall drive through the area and
�������� ���������� �������� ������ ������������������ ���������������� ������ ��������
from. Farmers will still be selling Geauga
maple syrup produced from their sugar
bush. Geauga County is highly acclaimed
for being one of the best places to produce
maple syrup.
Many of the stores in this guide are
Amish owned. When planning to shop at
Amish businesses, it is best to plan around
Sundays as they are all closed for the day.
Countless businesses are on the back roads
outside of the towns.
Slow down and take time to enjoy
this unique area. Normal speeds for buggies
range between 5 mph and 8 mph. Use caution
when approaching and passing. Anticipate
left hand turns made by buggies when
passing and don’t spook the horse by blowing
your horn when next to it.
There are so many reasons to be
drawn to our unique area and the fall is an
especially wonderful time to visit. In the fall
the vistas will be ablaze from all the maple
trees adorning the hills. The area is great for
a shopping trip or a weekend visit. Enjoy
