Newport News Education Center expands Michael Godfrey
Saint Leo University celebrated the grand opening of its expanded Newport
News location on April 17. The center added 4,386 square feet to its site
at One BayPort Way, Newport News, VA. The Newport News Education
Center now offers a fully equipped cybersecurity lab as well as additional
classroom space and a study lounge. In addition, the Newport News Education
Center boasts the university’s second Military Resource Center (MRC),
which is available to all student-veterans and military-affiliated students.
“My hope is that this new space will provide for more educational opportunities
for individuals in the local area,” said Michael Godfrey, Saint Leo
Virginia Peninsula area director. “Further, I hope the new MRC will serve as a
space that our students who are veterans will fully utilize as a show of Saint
Leo’s commitment to our military and student-veterans.”
Alumnus and hospital executive speaks on
the national opioid crisis
Saint Leo alumnus and Board of Trustees member John
Picciano ’69 spoke to students and faculty in April on the
seriousness of the opioid epidemic. Picciano delivered
the keynote address for the inaugural interdisciplinary
conference hosted by the College of Education and Social
Services. The conference was organized to allow educators
from the college’s various academic departments and
professionals at community organizations and agencies
to come together and discuss possible solutions to social
issues that cut across numerous professional fields. Picciano
has an extensive professional background in clinical
social work, mental health, and hospital management. He
is the chief executive officer of Oglethorpe Inc., a company
that provides management services to hospitals, clinics,
and wellness centers, including facilities that specialize in
behavioral health and addiction treatment.
Faculty and students present at interdisciplinary conference
In March, Saint Leo University served as a sponsor of the Virginia Region
Interdisciplinary Academic Conference in Norfolk, VA. The focus of the conference
was to present and discuss research related to the teaching of adult
learners, nontraditional students, and military students. Several Saint Leo
University faculty and students presented at the conference, offering insights on
theories related to the needs of today’s adult learners. The conference drew an
estimated audience of about 100 attendees from as far away as Georgia and was
the first of its kind in Virginia.
