Cobb County’s Public Safety Award Winners Announced
at the 2018 Public Safety Appreciation Breakfast

morning during its annual Public Safety Appreciation
Breakfast at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre.
The event drew a sold out crowd and kicked off Public Safety
to the men and women who work tirelessly to keep Cobb County
safe.
Monica Pearson, retired daily news anchor from Channel 2
Action News, served as the awards emcee, honoring each of
the nominees and presented the 2018 Public Safety Awards.
The breakfast also included guest speaker Senator David
Perdue. Nominations were received from public safety agencies
campus police, and EMS.

2018 Public Safety Employee of the Year
This award is given to an employee who has performed his or
her job with exceptional skill, exhibited leadership and critical
incident management and a devotion to their responsibilities.
The 2018 Public Safety Employee of the Year received a glass
sculpture created by Lillie Glassblowers in Smyrna, and a
handgun courtesy of GLOCK.

saved many lives in Marietta.
On March 31, 2018, Duncan responded to a report of stabbing
large slash across his throat, which was bleeding heavily. Duncan
gauze to the wound. Being thorough and diligent in all situations,

Duncan treated the patient until the EMS arrived and took over.
Due to his training, experience and preparedness, both Duncan
and his colleague were able to treat the victim before it worsened.
Awards of Merit
The Award of Merit recognizes a deserving recipient for acts of
courage, demonstrating genuine care and concern for the citizens
of the community and going above and beyond the call of duty,
often resulting in a life being saved. This year, our esteemed list of
nominees warranted two awards.
Austell Fire Engine 1 A Shift, City of Austell Fire Department
Austell Engine 1 A-Shift has extensive training in swift water
rescue and used their ingenuity and determination in this rescue.
On May 28, 2017 the Douglas County Fire Department
requested assistance from Austell Engine 1, A Shift at Sweetwater
were stranded in the creek and unable to make it back to shore.
There was at least one injury. Engine-1 arrived on the scene 10
minutes after receiving the call.
After assessing the situation, Engine 1 A-shift determined the
best course of action and secured a 200 foot trolley line by using
they rescued the victims one-by-one and guided them safely to
shore.
If were not for the quick response and thinking of this unit,
the result of this incident would have been very different. The
victims were examined by EMS personnel before being sent to
the emergency room for further evaluation.
