Women Rock Sing Off!
This January, high school students from around Tampa Bay were invited by the Women Rock producers
to audition to sing onstage with The Florida Orchestra at the Women Rock Pops concert on March 1-3.
We asked the show’s producers: Why invite students onstage? Here’s what they said:
The Sing Off competition was created with two main objectives. Everyone on the creative production
team for Women Rock has a background in music education, so we all recognize how much talent
student musicians have, particularly in
counties like Pinellas, Hillsborough and
Pasco where the arts are a treasured
part of learning. First and foremost, we
wanted an opportunity to showcase that
talent where high school singers would
have a chance to shine on a professional
stage. We also wanted to create a bridge
between high school students and
orchestras, to introduce them to the
breadth of repertoire the orchestra plays,
and to send a gentle reminder that even
though they don’t have annual field trips
to hear the orchestra play, attending concerts as a young adult is an exciting way to connect with live
music.
For the upcoming Women Rock performances, the Sing Off winners will be treated as if they were
seasoned Broadway singers visiting Florida as guest artists. They’ll be invited to rehearse with The
Florida Orchestra the week of the concert, have a sound check, discuss wardrobe with the producers,
and become the featured soloist onstage, performing the song of their choosing, during one of the
live concerts.
Winners of the competition will be announced in mid-February on TFO social media accounts.
