Just a thirty minute drive down 276 from Waynesville, the
Shining Creek Path in Cruso is a perfect trail for letting
your mind and imagination run free. The sound of Shining
Creek will drown out all that has your mind occupied and
help you to see the perfect design of Mother Nature before
you. Notice the countless species of plants and fungi,
decomposing trees returning to where they came from,
and experience the magic of walking through
Rhododendron or Mountain Laurel tunnels.
The trail is for the most part obvious and well maintained.
Shortly after you begin, you will hit a steeper part that will
bring you up and away from the creek. It will make you feel
like you’re going the wrong way, but eventually you will
reach a fake summit where the Old Butt Knob trail splits
off to your right. Off to your left, you will hear the sounds
of the creek again. From here on out, you will walk alongside
What makes this trail appealing for everyone is that it can
be as long or as short as you would like it to be. It connects
with the Art Loeb Trail, which is a 28.5 mile system that
leads to popular spots like Black Balsam Knob and Tennant
Mountain. There are numerous mini trails that split off and
water pools - perfect for taking a dip when the weather is
are plenty of options. Just be sure to heed the bear warnings
and store your food properly. Always leave the area
Happy hiking, y’all!
*It’s important to note that the Shining Rock trailhead is at the
end of the parking lot on the right, with the ‘Big East Fork’
sign. This sign often confuses people, because in actuality, the
trailhead for Big East Fork (another must!), is just up the road
from the sign.
