Audubon Sanctuary
at Pine Island For nature lovers, The Donal C. O’Brien
Jr. Audubon Sanctuary at Pine Island is
a must-see. The refuge, which lies across
from the Hampton Inn and Suites in
Corolla, features a 2.5-mile nature trail
with viewing stands — the perfect place
for an easy yet delightful hike.
The Sanctuary visitors center also offers kayak tours through
the marsh, as well as a variety of fascinating educational programs
allowing visitors to learn more about this invaluable preserve.
The Sanctuary is a vital resource for birds and wildlife along the
Currituck Sound and across the Atlantic Flyway, a bird migration route
along the Atlantic coast. With its extensive marshes, waterways and
diversity of upland maritime forest, the 2,600-acre property contributes
to essential environmental and wildlife conservation efforts.
Named for Audubon's late board chair
and legendary conservationist, Donal
C. O'Brien, Jr., the Sanctuary protects
170 bird species, as well as 7 amphibian
species, 17 reptile species, 19 mammal
species and more than 350 species of
plants to maintain the natural balance of
the ecosystem and to protect the area for
future generations to enjoy.
