Dear _________________________________:
Our state’s public pensions have yet to regain strength from the Great Recession.
Today, the pension systems continue to lag. This leaves many of North Carolina’s
state retirees having to choose between food or medicine, struggling while our state’s
economy continues to fl ourish.
We dedicated our careers to serve our state, usually with 25-30 years of service. It is
now imperative that legislators keep their promises and provide our retired teachers and
state government retirees with a deserved cost of living adjustment.
Also, we contributed 6 percent of our pretax income into the retirement system to
provide for our retirements. Our pensions are by no means “a gift”. State government
employees sacrifi ce during their careers to receive their investment back in retirement.
The dedication and sacrifi ce of our state’s public sector professionals almost always
go unnoticed. Until the recession of 2008, the State provided annual cost of living
adjustments to keep pensions level against infl ation. Ten years later, our state
government has recovered but no real relief has arrived for state retirees.
As retirees, we have done our part, it’s time for the State to step up and to do its part.
Sincerely,
