‘We Strive to be One’
Chairman and CEO Ward Nye has
described 2019 as a record year for
Martin Marietta. During the holidays,
teams across the company shared their
good fortune with their communities.
From parades to toy drives and other
charitable activities, employees opened
their hearts and wallets, giving generously
wherever it was needed.
In Ball Ground, Georgia, the local Martin
Marietta operation participated in the
annual March of the Toys Parade for the
very first time.
“It was a great opportunity to step into
our community,” said Ball Ground Quarry
Plant Manager Chuck Schlumbrecht. “We
arranged for the local Caterpillar dealership
to lend us a new haul truck and (Assistant
Plant Manager) Josh Glisson and I spent a
day decorating it with more than 4,000 lights
and a pair of artificial snow blowers. You can
be really creative with Christmas lights.”
In Iowa, the Portable 2 crew continued
its tradition of holiday giving by donating
five new bicycles to the local middle school
and providing new toys and bicycles to the
local Hampton Rotary Club’s Operation
Santa toy drive.
Dan Hanson, president of the Hampton
Rotary, later shared photos of the toy drive
with the Alden District’s leadership.
“While we don’t take photos of (our toy
drive) applicants, I want to share their
sincere gratitude and thankfulness,”
Hanson wrote in an email. “Please share our
thanks with everyone at Martin Marietta!”
Throughout the Mid-Atlantic Division,
teams organized to participate in their
local Toys for Tots campaigns, said Office
Manager Gwen Jones, while noting that the
effort was spearheaded by Director of
Environmental Services Brian North.
Teams from North Carolina, South
Carolina, Virginia and Maryland contributed
to campaigns that ultimately brought
holiday cheer to more than 160,000
children, Jones said while citing statistics
from the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, the
organization that runs Toys for Tots.
Similar efforts took place across the
company, including in Raleigh, where Nye
joined with a team of Corporate Office and
NC-East District employees to deliver a
check and 300 toys to Toys for Tots
representatives.
In Colorado, more than 800 people in

the Western Division again gathered to
represent the company in the Colorado
Springs Festival of Lights Parade and the
Pueblo Parade of Lights.
Job Cost Administrator Cherie Porter, a
member of the committee that plans the
division’s holiday parade presence, said
that while their team also wanted to have
an impact on the community, participation
in the events came with added benefits.
“One of the reasons we do this every year
is that our families love it. We get to see
each other outside of work. We meet each
other’s spouses and see how much our
children have grown,” she said. “Everyone
from the community comes out, lines the
streets of the parade route and makes a big
production of it, but it’s not just about the
community. It’s about our team and how we
strive to be one.” ▼
