WINNER 2017
Facing
the Uncertainty
with Hope
March is a month known for its unpredictability, and this March was
one that will change us all. Like most everyone, I am writing this April message
from home. My wife is nearby, and my daughter is nishing her college
courses online from her room. This is not an afternoon of working at
home; this is a national effort to battle the coronavirus. These days of doing
things differently have shown me that more than ever that I appreciate
family – my own which is just a room away – and the talented family that
bring you The ournal every month. I miss spending time in the ofce with
this amazing staff, but knowing they and you, our loyal readers, are doing
their best to stay safe is the most important thing.
Your emails remind us how much you value this publication, and I
thank you for that and for your support of all our advertisers now and in the
months ahead. They need your patronage to return to normal, and I know
you will be there for them all. Our Journal may look a little different for the
next few months because of stresses placed on our printers, but what will not
change are our tremendous stories about the hyperlocal news in your towns.
We have increased our online presence to keep you connected with
important and interesting articles, and we welcome you to share your stories
of local heroes. We also know you are nding new ways to ll your
hours at home. or many that means nally getting around to tackling
those home improvement projects you’ve been too busy to get to. Therefore,
The Journal offers you our annual ome Improvement uide, lled
with a diverse group of home improvement professionals who are working
hard to make your living space more enjoyable. It’s a perfect time to get an
estimate or get the job underway.
We also congratulate the Garden State Film Festival team who had
to make an unprecedented move to stream the entire event online. As the
presenting sponsor of this important arts event, we support them in their
groundbreaking move as well as all the other theaters in our community
who were forced to cancel so many events. Additionally, we ask that you be
generous to the nonprots in our area who were forced to postpone many
of their essential spring fundraisers.
Throughout it all, our humanity has been shining brightly. Our
healthcare professionals and other workers are risking their own health on
a much-overworked daily basis. The many volunteers who care for those
in need and for the animals in our shelters have continued their compassionate
work. There are many more in need, the small businesses which in
Monmouth County comprise the engine of employment, the service professionals,
hotel and restaurant workers, ofce staffs, and so many others
who use their skills each day.
We will win. We will all come together again in our usual fashion. We
will go back to classrooms and events, to our places of employment, to our
houses of worship and to socializing with friends, just like we did when
we came back from Superstorm Sandy. We are strong. We are a family. We
need to remember that in these uncertain times to not let fear overtake our
life as this can lead to unhappiness and despair. The only thing stronger
than fear is hope and faith. Together we will all come through this stronger
in our bond of humanity and community.
