Going into this season, only a single Holmdel wrestler
has taken the title of Region champion in the school’s
history. According to the record books, that feat was accomplished
by John Mullan in 1983. But Michael Pavlinetz
ended that 37-year streak when he captured the 220-pound
2020 Region 5 championship.
The senior’s postseason started on a good note. Pavlinetz
had won a District championship last year. He repeated this
season, taking the District 18 title with a close 3-2 decision over

Pavlinetz’s achievements on the mat are an extension
of the successes he enjoyed on the gridiron this past fall. He
was named to All-Division and All-Conference teams by multiple
organizations and media outlets at the completion of
the football season. He will join the Massachusetts Maritime
Academy football squad next fall and plans to major in Marine
Engineering.
