Spotlight on Non-Profits
The non-profit organizations play an important role in building
healthy communities, providing services that create more equitable
and thriving communities. Bethlehem is fortunate to have many
non-profit organizations that serve our community.
Community Caregivers, Inc. was founded in 1994 and their mission is
to enable individuals of all ages to maintain their independence, dignity
and quality of life within their homes and communities. They provide
non-medical support services to those in need and they operate with a
powerful volunteer network of dedicated individuals who want to help
their neighbors. Services include transportation, friendly visits, respite
for caregivers, shopping assistance, prescription pickup and telephone
assurance calls.
Friends of Bethlehem Parks and Recreation was formed to work with
the town’s Parks and Recreation Department to improve Bethlehem parks,
recreational programming and their usership by raising funds, organizing
volunteers and increasing awareness. Some of their programs include the
annual I Love My Park Day, Boston bus trip fundraiser and the ongoing Tree
& Bench Program. Their work with our parks helps improve the quality of
life for all residents.
The mission of Friends of Five Rivers is to support environmental
education at the Five Rivers Environmental Education Center as well as
to enhance the experience of visitors to Five Rivers and to promote the
interests of the Center. FFR members provide both people-power and funds
to support and enhance Five Rivers’ programs. Activities include, but are
not limited to: funding and teaching guided outdoor lessons for over 3,000
school children each year; planting and maintaining the Wildlife Garden;
supporting the annual Fall Festival; and funding the annual Wendy Suozzo
Memorial Award, a scholarship for Bethlehem Central High School seniors.
To Life! is a unique organization with an important mission - to educate
the community about breast cancer detection, treatments and related health
matters, and provide support services to breast cancer patients, caregivers,
family and friends. The organization was founded in 1998 after its founder,
Mara Ginsberg, was diagnosed with breast cancer. They serve women and
their families in the greater Capital Region, providing services such as support
groups, individual supportive counseling, educational programming, wig
and mastectomy boutiques and much more. And, because early detection
is half the battle against breast cancer, To Life! aggressively reaches out to
the community with breast self-examination training.
