A heartfelt congratulations to Don Burden, former
Shrewsbury mayor and current president
of the Shrewsbury Historical Society, for receiving
a Historic Preservation Recognition Award
as presented by the National Society Daughters of
the American Revolution.
This is a noteworthy award. Burden was nominated
by Elizabeth Dunnell, honorary regent of
Shrewsbury Towne-Monmouth Center (STMC), and
Deborah Hvizdos, STMC and New Jersey State Society
of the National Society Daughters of the American
Revolution (NJDAR) state historian, who praised
Burden for his tireless service to the NJDAR and his
lifelong commitment to the study and preservation
of history in Shrewsbury and in New Jersey.
Burden has a deep love for Shrewsbury. He
served as mayor for eight years. He has currently and previously been
involved with the Shrewsbury Homesteaders, Boy Scouts Troop 50, the
Hose Company and, of course, his beloved historical society. He is also
the historian for the Borough of Shrewsbury and has served as a commissioner
to the Monmouth County Historic Commission
and the Monmouth County Library System.
Burden’s wife, Mary Lea, is also involved with
numerous Shrewsbury organizations and served as
past president of American Association of University
Women (AAUW) and current member of the Executive
Committee of AAUW.
Burden knows so much of the town’s history
that he literally wrote the book. He, along with
co-writer Rick Geffken, are the authors of “The Story
of Shrewsbury,” a detailed guide to the 350 years of
this historic town.
In Burden’s acceptance letter, Sally E. Patterson,
national vice chair of the Historic Preservation Recognition
Award Committee, National Society of the
Daughters of the American Revolution, wrote, “What
is particularly interesting is the breadth of Mr. Burden’s work. Many times
nominees work on one or two projects, but Mr. Burden has a rich and
wide variety of accomplishments in historic preservation. The people of
your town should be very appreciative of his work.”
