language therapist, occupational
therapist, behaviorist, child
psychologist, nutritionist, or an
academic tutor. I always find
it interesting and important to
remember that each of these
therapists and professionals generally
agree that testing intervention
and/or therapy at an earlier
age is best and most effective, as
children’s brains are the most pliable
when they are young.
Parents always want to do what
is right for their child. Even with
the knowledge and genuine belief
that your child’s teacher has his
best interest at heart and believing
that the teacher has the
educational credentials and experience
to suggest outside evaluation
or testing, this information
is difficult to hear.
Some parents find it helpful to
talk with others who have dealt
with similar issues involving
their own child. Some parents
simply want to follow the teacher’s
advice and not share their
child’s issues with others except
their spouse. Still others simply
need a bit of time to process this
new information. Parents should
not be shy to ask more questions
if this subject arises. It is a teacher’s
and a school’s sincere desire
to help your child succeed in all
aspects of life that necessitates a
teacher to make such a suggestion.
Accepting this information
in the spirit in which it is given
may help parents through this
important phase of childhood
education and development.
