Three Holmdel Girl
Scouts Earn Prestigious
Silver Award
This winter, three Holmdel Girl Scouts from Troop No. 564 received
the prestigious Silver Award. The Girl Scout Silver Award is the highest
award a Cadette can earn. The three honorees were Eva Merhi,
Isabella Marotta and Samantha Salerno. All of the girls are freshmen at
Holmdel High School. They earned their Silver Award for creating a program
to educate younger children about the dangers of gun violence and
empower students by teaching them about gun safety.
All of the honorees were victims of a past swatting incident when
they were in third grade. Each of the girls remembered the event vividly,
and from this incident was born a desire for change. In their Silver Award
report, Eva Merhi wrote:
“It was all a hoax, but what if the false gunman report hadn’t been?
Would I have died that day because someone who shouldn’t have had
access to a gun did? I don’t have the answer to those questions, but I do
know that stuff like this happens too often. The only difference is that
sometimes it isn’t a hoax. People are dying because of others who are
irresponsible with guns. Too many kids are killed or injured because of
gun violence, and I don’t think that that should have to be our reality. I
believe kids should be able to go to school, unafraid and stay safe. I hope
in the future that will be the case.”
The girls hoped that, by creating and presenting a blog and slideshow
on this important topic, they could inspire a more informed generation
– starting with the Girl Scouts they presented to.
Samantha Salerno explained, “We educated other Girl Scouts about
gun safety and statistics to teach them about the things that we aren’t
taught in school about guns, such as the commonality of gun threats or

Because their meetings became virtual, the girls were able to present
in multiple states, which allowed them to learn more about gun safety
in other areas of the U.S.
Salerno said, “Many of our plans and ideas had to be altered to complete
our project. We were able to adapt enough to present a slightly
tailored presentation each time for different age groups and additional
infographics added for the out-of-state troops. We also all became more

The Girl Scout Silver Award represents a girl’s accomplishments in
Girl Scouting and in her community as she grows and works to improve
her life and the lives of others. The requirements of the Girl Scout Silver
Award help girls build skills, explore careers, gain leadership experience
and make a commitment to self-improvement.
