Colts Neck Baseball May
Lack Experience But Has
No Shortage of Talent
BY TIM MORRIS
Like every high school baseball team in the Shore Conference, Colts
Neck is dealing with the effects of a lost season due to the pandemic.
The challenges are different for each team. Some, who have a lot of
seniors, can at least draw upon experience they gained as sophomores.
For Coach Mike Yorke’s Cougars, the concern is experience, the lack of to
be precise.
“The team is inexperienced and junior-heavy,” said Yorke. “Inexperience
has shown throughout.”
The Cougars are leaning heavily on eight juniors and one sopho-
experience. Joe Cilea and Collin Kratzer are the juniors who saw varsity
playing time as freshmen. Both are key players.
played as a sophomore.
Cilea, Kratzer and sophomore Tyler Spencer are outstanding with
their glove and arm, their coach pointed out. The trio make Colts Neck
strong defensively up the middle, and with an inexperienced team, that
defense is vital.
The Cougars are set on the hill where they have live arms and
depth. Senior Brendan Whalen, junior Christian Rice and junior Anthony
Gubitos are penciled in as the starters. Senior Sam Denmark, juniors
Kratzer and Dave Cohen, and Spencer are the relievers. They can also
start. Gubitos and Cohen are lefties and the other hurlers right-handers.
Whalen, Rice and Gubitos can bring the heat, according to Yorke. They
are power pitchers.
seniors Ben Goldman and Nick Villani will alternate at second, Rice will
play third, and Kratzer is backed up at short by junior Nick Carell.

and Mickey Thompson. In left, juniors Brad Salamone and Matt Jacobson
will share the duties.
The batting order has Kratzer at the top with Spencer, Rice and
Salamone in the run-producing 3-4-5 positions. The offense has been
productive early.
Yorke is in his 21st season as Colts Neck’s only coach, and he has
made the Cougars one of the conference’s most consistent winning programs.
Despite the lack of experience, these Cougars should again be
playing for postseason baseball as there is no lack of talent. Three of the
juniors have already made their college commitments: Kratzer to West
Point, Rice to Wofford College (Spartanburg, South Carolina) and Gubitosi
to the University of Delaware.
winning side of a 3-2 record. The team went 1-1 in the B North Division,
splitting their two-game series with Wall. Both Wall and Colts Neck are
title contenders in the division.
The Cougars won their game in the series 2-1 in extra innings when
Goldman raced home from third when a curve ball in the dirt got away
from the Crimson Knights’ catcher. Kratzer closed out the win in relief.
