April 30 to plant 11 trees in honor of Arbor Day. These local girls were doing
their part to help the Girl Scouts of America meet their bold initiative
to address climate change: plant 5 million trees across the country by 2026.
This effort is a partnership with Elliott Wildlife Values Project and American
Forest. The new trees were bought with hard-earned cookie money, and each
troop will be responsible for the huge undertaking of watering the trees three
times a week to keep them healthy.
Carissa Gaborow and Elisa Bertocci Caneiro, two of the Fair Haven troop
leaders, played pivotal roles in bringing this event to Fair Haven. Gaborow
brought the idea to Bertocci Caneiro who presented it to the Jersey Shore
Council, then acted as a liaison between the Girl Scouts Regional Coordinator
and all the Fair Haven troops along with Privatera’s Florist and
Landscaping, which provided the trees for planting. David Bordelon, of
FH Fields Natural Area Advisory Committee, was integral in choosing the
site and types of trees and arranging for the mulch. The girls had fun
loading up the wheel barrels with mulch and wheeling them through the
woods. Fair Haven Mayor Lucarelli, Councilman Chris Rodriguez, Councilwoman
Laline Neff and The Fair Haven Green Team were also essential in
making it all happen.
The new trees can be enjoyed by taking a walk along the Fair Haven
Nature Preserve path parallel to Ridge Road.
