Sydney Goldson Leads Holmdel
Girls’ Track Team to State Sectional Title

Holmdel High School sprinter Sydney Goldson led
the girls’ track team to the NJSIAA Central Jersey
Group 2 Sectional championship and collected
four gold medals in the process. The Columbia University
bound senior swept all three sprint events and then
anchored the 4x400 meter relay squad to victory.
She started with a narrow win in the 100-meter
dash with a time of 12:75, edging Chloee Dotts (12:78)
of Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School by just
three one-hundredths of a second. Holmdel’s Margaret
“Maggie” Wojie closed late to pick up the bronze medal.
Goldson had an easier time of it in the 200 meters,
pair met again at 400 meters, and the result was a decisive
win by the Holmdel athlete, who crossed the line
several meters ahead.
The Hornet 4x400 relay squad turned back a game Rumson-Fair Haven
contingent. Meggie Wojie performed the lead-off duties followed by
Katie Vassilakos and Lexi Wojie taking the second and third legs. Goldson
anchored the winning quartet as her last appearance of the day.
Holmdel took silver in the 4x100 relay. Arianna Bartholemew led
off, then Lexi Wojie and Vassilakos handled legs two and three. Maggie
Wojie took the baton in third place, 15 meters behind
the Rahway runner in second place. Wojie brought the
coming down the straightaway and took second place
Wojie was the only other Hornet to claim a gold
medal in an individual event. She posted a 1:08.70 in
the 400-meter hurdles with Carteret’s Raven Orange
(1:09.58) in close pursuit.
Holmdel grasped the title with a high score of 93
were Rumson-Fair Haven (78), Metuchen (58), Matawan
Carteret (31), Robbinsville (27) and Raritan (25).
Also scoring for Holmdel in individual events were
Caitlyn Joyce (sixth – 1600 meters), Vassilakos (sixth –
jump), Bartholemew (second – long jump, third – triple jump) and Sarah
Maggie Wojie will continue her academic and athletic pursuits at
Saint Joseph’s University (Philadelphia). Bartholemew will do likewise at
Bryant University.
