M
grant from the New Jersey Committee of The Garden Club of
America (GCA) that was proposed and submitted by Rumson
Garden Club (RGC) to improve and increase the natural greenery of the
appreciation of nature.
“Educating the young is a priority for Rumson Garden Club as well
as the GCA,” RGC President Maya Speelmans said. “Teaching about the
growing arts can cure 'plant blindness' in children.”
species to nurture pollinators and to educate the children about the importance
of “going native,” a bed with vegetables that were propagated
by RGC members and MDCC staff, and a Sensory Garden. The harvested
vegetables will be distributed to the students' families. The Sensory
Garden, which, for touch, is planted with soft “lambs' ears,” “hens and
chicks” and for smell is planted with oregano, sage and scented geranium.
A variety of species also are planted to stimulate the senses of taste
MDCC's bilingual students.
The project is a result of several partners. In addition to the
grant, Ryser's Landscape Supply in Little Silver generously donated forty
40-pound bags of mushroom compost valued at $280. This project also is
a joint venture of RGC and the MDCC staff and children. The children, while
maintaining the beds in the summer, are both learning about how plants
grow and looking forward to enjoying the fresh produce.
